Introduction

The Grange University Hospital is a new build £350m hospital in Cwmbran, Wales. This state-of -the-art facility forms part of a wider strategic plan which will see Aneurin Bevan Health Board significantly modernise its health service provision.

Project

Originally known as the Specialist Critical Care Centre, the hospital contains a host of specialist services in one place, including a 24-hour Emergency Department. It is the main hospital in Gwent for people that have suffered a heart attack, a stroke, a major accident, require major surgery, or other highly specialised care.

The 560-bed facility brings together more than 40 complex and more acute services onto one site and serves a population of over 600,000 people. There are 15 wards, with some specifically for Critical Care, Cardiology and Paediatrics. The wards mainly comprise 32 beds, with 24 single rooms with ensuite bathrooms and 2×4 bedded bays.

BetweenGlassBlinds & Vistamatic

With the COVID-19 pandemic putting extreme pressure on the UK and subsequent healthcare services, the Aneurin Bevin Health Board sought immediate assistance from main contractor Laing O’Rourke and their supply chain to open this hospital even earlier than originally scheduled. The hospital had the potential to play a significant part in assisting the Welsh government in their response to the pandemic. Sections of the hospital were delivered almost a year earlier than originally planned, a testament to the commitment of all involved.

As one of the largest BetweenGlassBlinds projects to date, approximately 400 integral blinds units were installed across the hospital, along with 30 Vistamatic vision panels.  The sister companies worked with Dorsuite to provide Vista Max panels for theatre doors and integral blind units for bedroom doors and windows.  BetweenGlassBlinds additionally supplied Axis Entrance Solutions with bespoke units for bedrooms and patient bay doors.

The feedback from Laing O’Rourke was extremely positive with the company noting ‘Vistamatic and BetweenGlassBlinds worked closely with the Laing O’Rourke design team to develop appropriate solutions for the Aneurin Bevan Health Board and all parties are very happy with the end product.’

Vistamatic and BGB Managing Director Mark Nash said, “We were happy to rise to the challenge of such an urgent project.  We know that patients and staff will now have access to a fantastic new facility.”
